When it comes to keeping a home or office clean, most people hit the basics: floors, counters, bathrooms, and maybe a quick vacuum here and there. But what about the spots you don’t see or don’t think about?
At Clean as Can Bee, we’ve seen it all—and we can tell you that the dirtiest places are often the ones that get skipped entirely. In this post, we’re breaking down 10 commonly forgotten spots and how often they really need some attention.

1. Light Switches and Door Handles
How often? Once a week
These are some of the most-touched surfaces in any home or business, yet they’re rarely on the cleaning checklist. Germs, oils, and grime build up fast. Use a disinfectant or alcohol-based wipe weekly to keep them clean, especially in high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms.
2. Ceiling Fans
How often? Once a month
Out of sight, out of mind—until you turn it on and a cloud of dust rains down. Use a microfiber duster or pillowcase to wipe each blade. If you have allergies, you may want to clean them every couple of weeks.
3. Baseboards
How often? Every 2–3 months
They’re not front and center, but baseboards collect dust, pet hair, and grime. Use a damp cloth or sponge and a bit of gentle soap. If you clean them quarterly, your whole room will look fresher.
4. Underneath Appliances
How often? Twice a year
You’d be surprised what ends up under your fridge or stove—crumbs, pet toys, even mold from spills. Pull out large appliances every 6 months and sweep, vacuum, and mop the area.
5. Garbage Cans (Inside and Out)
How often? Once a month
It’s easy to think the liner keeps the bin clean, but leaks, odors, and bacteria build up quickly. Rinse and disinfect your bins monthly—more often if you're tossing food waste.
6. Remote Controls and Keyboards
How often? Once a week
If multiple hands are using them daily, these surfaces are hotspots for germs. Use disinfectant wipes weekly, and for keyboards, compressed air can help remove debris between the keys.
7. Shower Curtains and Liners
How often? Every month (liner), every 2–3 months (curtain)
Shower liners are prone to mold and mildew. Many are machine washable, or you can soak them in a solution of vinegar and baking soda. Fabric curtains should also be washed every few months.
8. Behind the Toilet
How often? Twice a month
Sure, the inside of the bowl gets scrubbed—but how often do you get behind it? This area is a hotspot for dust, hair, and bacteria. Use a disinfecting cleaner and scrub brush to hit this spot at least every other week.
9. Air Vents and Filters
How often? Vents: Monthly dusting / Filters: Every 1–3 months
Dusty vents circulate dirty air. Wipe them down monthly with a microfiber cloth. As for filters, follow your HVAC system’s recommendations, but a good rule of thumb is to replace them every 1–3 months.
10. Refrigerator Shelves and Drawers
How often? Monthly
Spills and old food debris can cause odors and bacteria. Remove shelves and drawers and clean them with warm, soapy water once a month. It’ll help keep your food safe and your fridge smelling fresh.
